It has taken a while for me to post about our trip to McGuffin last Sepemtber. The peice was written while the trip was fresh. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is amazing how a pastime that was born out of trying to avoid stinging insects evolved into an epic sister trip, which evolved further into a family bonding experience and then further morphed into an outing of remembrance. That was Sept 20, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In the summer of 2008, Stacey bought a canoe. A big green beast that was on sale at Canadian Tire. She had discovered she was allergic to bees, and not just a little allergic.\u00a0 Reactions got progressively worse with each sting, many times leading to trips to the emergency room via ambulance rides. Epi-pens were used on many occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an avid outdoors person, Stacey was looking for activities that would still allow her to be outside enjoying the fresh air but at a distance from bees and wasps\u2026.. cue the canoe. Stacey needed a paddling partner and got me, Jennifer, to join her. Thus, the adventure team of the Silly Sisters was born.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, Stacey and I took a three-day canoe in Lakeland Provincial Park. Three days, four lakes, one nasty portage and two decent ones: all under our own muscle power. That trip set the stage.\u00a0 We were blown away at the park\u2019s pristine natural beauty, the isolation, the wolf song, the bathing cow moose and the pretty damn good fishing. Each stop we would say, \u201cWe got to bring Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next few years we did bring Dad and our group grew. Simon, Shelby and Dad joined Stacey and I. We created so many more great memories: naps on the ground, \u201cI need the hook, I need the pliers\u201d, whitecap waves, walking out the canoes, swimmers itch, Simon the gondolier, more great fishing and so much laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, Dad got the diagnosis. His words were, \u201cThey found a few cancer cells.\u201d Our summer trip plans got modified from a three-day trip to Elanor Lake, to a day trip to Crow Lake to four days watching the Blue Jays lose ball games in the comfort of Mom and Dad\u2019s living room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We rallied around Dad. We did what we could to help him and Mom on a journey too many families face: trips to the Cross, surgeons, specialists, emergency rooms. We learned medical terms, about pain management, nutrition, self-care, how to fall apart away from the hospital bed and prop each other up as we watched Dad slowly losing his courageous battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our plans this summer had a trip to McGuffin but we were unsure on how this would take shape. Simon wanted to come, but the date we chose in August came and went due to other commitments. Another August date saw temperatures of 30 plus degrees, and no one wants to spend three days sweating in the bush without air conditioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, another small window appeared, September 19 to 21, Friday to Sunday. Lists were made, fishing gear purchased, and time booked off. What was supposed to be a three-day, two-night trip got adjusted, yet again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think our days of sleeping on the ground are numbered, and a recent health issue is making sleeping in a comfy bed difficult. After a tear-filled early morning phone call, the trip got shortened to a one day in-and-out excursion. And what a day it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We have a new term for early morning kick off times: stupid early. Stacey picked me up from my sleep over at Mom\u2019s at the crack of dawn, a really stupid early time for a Saturday. We were off to Shaw Lake, our in-put location. The trip there consisted of a big beautiful red sunrise, mixed tapes and strong coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shaw Lake is a beauty of a spot, one of the many lakes that make up Lakeland Provincial Park. It is home to extensive hiking trails and part of one excellent canoe circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We parked at the day use area at Shaw Lake. Our beautiful god of a canoe, Marvin, was our watercraft of choice. New to us on this trip was a canoe cart. Now we can drag around our canoe in style with ease. What a great purchase!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It took us around 45 minutes to cross Shaw to the southeast corner where the park trail system skirts the shore. There is a nice little sandy beach here. We found cranberries, the low bush kind. Yum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were two elusive aluminum canoe carts here. The unreliability of the carts being present lead Stacey to our own cart purchase. We thought we would try theirs anyway. Oh, that was a mistake. As our new cart was so much lighter, we quickly ditched the park\u2019s cart. One thing our new cart lacked was a T-shaped handle. Guess what, nature provided us with one. Behold, a stick. It was a great stick, until it broke. But we found a few more great sticks that fulfilled the purpose along the trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

AB Parks has invested resources into maintenance and upgrades in the park, one focus being the trail system. There was much evidence of this with large trees bucked and removed from the trail. \u00a0We encountered only one windblown tree that had fallen across the trail. After assessing the situation, we skidded the tree and branches off the trail and were on our way. Logger\u2019s daughter to the core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Further improvement saw culverts installed at low spots along the trail, and we would soon discover a new dock at McGuffin. More on that later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We never have a problem with lively conversation and sights along the trail provided for more inspiration. We always seemed to have a squirrel in our field of view. One fellow was quite curious. He scooted up a tree, around the back side and onto a branch. And as he stopped to check us out, he moved in a way neither of us had witnessed before. Squirrely Dan did a shimmy and shake. He either had a very itchy bottom or was marking his territory. But he scratched his bottom on the branch multiple times. All while maintaining eye contact. Very direct eye contact. Maybe he was aroused. Maybe he was a pervy squirrel\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We came across a few semi fresh bear tracks in one muddy section. Thankfully, it was just bear tracks and scat on our trail. No bear sightings. We also saw lots of deer tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was almost starting to have flashbacks to that nasty portage on our first trip out here in 2018, asking if there really was a lake at the other end of the trail. And then, there it was\u2026 McGuffin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The trail slopped down to the camping spots on the waters edge. Not a soul in sight. Just us and the lake. AND a brand-new dock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new dock is an aluminum monstrosity more fitting at a lake that has motorized boats on it. While this is gorgeous, it is quite impractical. Canoes and kayaks would not be able to dock on the dock. The walking surface of the doc is a minimum of three feet above the waters surface, so canoe in-put is down a small bank. The new dock does provide an excellent lake viewing platform. It is high enough to dangle your feet over the edge. It is made of material that will require little to no maintenance year after year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We parked Marvin on the grass and sat on the dock. We dangled our feet, held hands and drank in the beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stacey and I shared memories of being at that spot with Dad, how this place was so special to us and the memories we made there with him, Simon and Shelby. We had a tear and a hug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After some time soaking in the tranquility, we had a snack, used the backwoods throne and launched Marvin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s crazy how all the memories just flood back: where we saw momma moose take a bath, where we where when the wolves started howling, the location where the walleye were biting the best, and where we had to grab onto trees along the shore that one windy crossing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We passed between the shore and the long, small island closest to the campsite. We headed to the small island towards the southern arm. After a bit of a paddle, we stopped near a bank of reeds and readied our rods. I used a rattling rap style lure while Stacey opted for a medium sized olive-green spoon with black spots, a Len Thompson special that someone wrote phone number on the back of with a Sharpie. Stacey is pretty sure it was one of Dad\u2019s hooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We cast away and almost immediately, we both have fish on the hook. At the exact same time we say, \u201cHi Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For three hours, we cast, catch and release. Every other cast we have something. I land the first, a nice pike, well over the 63cm length requirement. We decide to not keep any fish. We don\u2019t want to make a fire to eat them here as we have a time limit. And we do not want to transport fish through the bush. We would just be rolling bear bait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stacey catches a walleye. I catch some weeds, then another jack. On one cast, I land my lure too close to the weeds. I feel the hook snag and figure I caught salad. I real in quite quick and then this pike jumps out of the water, launching towards the canoe startling me. I have never seen that before. I was 100% sure it was weeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We caught many fish, losing count as the minutes went by. At then end of three hours, Stacey caught two walleyes, so she is the Walleye Queen. I got the prize for the smallest pike. Well actually the two smallest fish we caught both were landed by me. The spoon I switched to was the same width as my winning fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We get off the lake at 2:30. Two ladies are sitting on the dock when we get to shore. Hikers. We snack, hydrate and pack up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We both snap pictures of different aspects of the site. I have Stacey sit at the picnic table right next to where Dad sat in the photo we used for his funeral card. It is surreal to be in this spot without him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We take a few more photos and hike out. The trip back to Shaw is blissfully uneventful. We stretch our legs and pick up a few rocks. Crossing Shaw longer this time around. Our arms are a bit jelly. A large V of migrating birds flies over head. Stacey pulls out the camera and I take a break. I am pretty sure it was a flock of sand hill cranes. We paddle out, getting back to the truck around 6:30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To summarize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One hour of driving, two hours paddling, a four-hour portage for three amazing hours reminiscing and fishing in one of our all-time favorite places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our arms were tired from paddling, our knees and back sore from dragging Marvin on the trails, but our hearts were full with love for each other and memories of a time that we hold dear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day was a long one but filled with magic. A week later, I find the day almost had a dreamlike quality to it. The trip filled so many needs we both had: to be in the bush, to canoe, to fish, to hang out with each other, to remember Dad.\u00a0 It is almost one year since Dad passed. It has been such a challenging time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McGuffin, I know we will be back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
