Even if you are not religious and celebrate Christmas as the birth of Jesus Christ, we are Canadian, and it is a Canadian family holiday and a true cultural celebration.
The earliest mention of the celebration of Christmas (in now Canada):
~ 1641 by First Nations:
“Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary who lived among the Huron of Georgian Bay from 1626, composed a Christmas carol, “Jesous Ahatonhia” or the “Huron Carol,” in their language telling the story of the birth of Jesus.” (from the Canadian Encyclopedia)
~ 1645 in Quebec City (New France). The French colonists gathered in a church to attend midnight mass. But, the first Canadian Christmas was celebrated in 1867, the year our country entered into Confederation.
Christmastime is many things, and different for everyone. It’s food, family, traditions, Christmas trees, winter decorations, holiday lights, laughter, prayers, reflection, gratefulness, giving, fun, music….the list goes on.
“Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because we see joy in people. It is forgetting self and finding time for others. It’s discarding the meaningless and stressing the true values.”
– Thomas S. Monson
Take the time to think of 3 things you are grateful for. Did you know that in being grateful can make you happier? Gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness (according to positive psychology research). “Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.” (Harvard University)
So let’s all give thanks and enjoy your holidays…whatever your traditions are. 🎅🤶☃️🎄⛪️🦌❄️
