Saturday, May 3rd – 7pm – Mission (McGrane Rd) Lac La Biche Lake
Beautiful end to a hot day (a toasty 27!) of working on the fencing for the 2 new gardens. 1st paddle of the year on LLB just south of Black Fox Island.

The lake was like glass when we started out, with a great coolness to the air on the water. It’s pretty shallow around this point, so you can see the wavy sand in the clear water. Plenty of birds and chit-chat (as usual ).
This year our intention is to try switching up the seating in the canoe, but when we pushed off, old habits prevailed. Same Captain in the back, and powerhouse in the front.

The scenery may be mostly brown, but the green hue coming from the tops of the poplar trees made it beautiful all the same. In the reeds there were some huge ice chunks and every so often you’d hear a big ice chunk fall into the water (LLB iceberg )

There were lots of birds tonight. Mallard Ducks, a pair of Great Blue Herons…then we spotted the swans infront of us! (I forgot my good zoom camera ) We didn’t want to scare them off, so we decided it was time to head back. Good thing! The paddle returning was a tough. We watch the wind forecast, so we thought we had till 9pm’ish before the weather changed unfavorably. Nope, forecast was off. The wind picked up, and we needed to go hard and steady. With tired arms from pounding staples, not to mention the 1st paddle of the year, it was challenging. Even had waves up on the side of the canoe for a stretch. The back passenger (not the front, ha ha) got splashed many times.
Good thing we work well together and can laugh about it… the giggles help distract that the canoe seems like it’s not moving.

We were glad to see the truck.
Looking forward to many more canoes this year… short and long.
Upcoming canoe trips; Lac La Biche Poplar Point towards LLB River (spring birding paddle), Crow Lake, Lac La Biche (from Whitesands down part Lac La Biche River), & McGuffin Lakeland Provincial Park. 😉
