INVENTIONS 👩‍🔬

MAY 1, 1941–

“Chereeioats” was introduced by General Mills. The name was changed to the one we all now know, “Cheerios”, in 1945.

Here are a few things you may not know about this popular cereal:

  1. Cheerios has had a few mascots. The first was a little girl named Cheeri O’Leary that was in 1940s printed ads. Then hey had the Cheerio Kid and his sidekick named Sue. This duo appeared in commercials in the 1950s, 19080 and brought back again in 2012. But the most famous of all was BuzzBee. Introduced with Honey Nut Cheerios in 1979 and still buzzing along on the box today.
  2. The first flavor variation made after the 30 years of just the classic recipe was Cinnamon Nut Cheerios.
  3. Lots of other flavors have been made, some very new and some only around for a limited time. A remarkable 29 flavors to be exact! Here is a bit of the list:
    • 1976 Cinnamon Nut
    • 1979 Honey Nut
    • 1988 Apple Cinnamon
    • 1992 Multigrain

TEVEVISION 📺

MAY 31, 2000 – Survivor premieres on television.

The competition style reality show exploded onto T.V. Viewers could not get enough of the contestants on an isolated island competing in challenges for a grand cash prize!

Since its debut, there have been 44 seasons and a total of 643 episodes. If you love the show, you will be happy to know it has also been renewed for the 2023-24 season.

With so many seasons, it is tough to pick out some highlights. So, here are a few things you may not know about the show:

  • The contestants can use bug spray and sunscreen. They are available in an off-camera medical box.
  • Some scenes are reenacted for the camera to get a better shot.
  • There have been 13 people that have quit the show.
  • Everyone who competes gets a paycheck, but how much depends on how long they can stay in the game.

Thanks for reading, the bites of May history.

History is very interesting; tells us where we have been, how the world was and often what mistakes have been made. Memory Monday is based on fun and fascinating bits of history that may not be the big events, but helped shape or bring us to where we are today.
