The Canned Legend: Happy Birthday, SPAM!
When Hormel Foods introduced a new canned luncheon meat on July 5, 1937, they probably didn’t realize they were making culinary history. Originally created as a clever solution to sell underutilized pork shoulder, SPAM—a portmanteau of “spiced” and “ham”—quickly morphed from a simple household convenience into a global phenomenon.
This canned luncheon meat became an indispensable protein source during World War II, when over 100 million pounds were shipped overseas to sustain Allied troops.
Some truly Canadian ways to cook SPAM!
Maple-Glazed SPAM: Slice it up and fry it in a pan, then toss in a splash of real Canadian maple syrup and a pinch of black pepper at the very end. The syrup caramelizes into a sweet, sticky glaze that perfectly cuts through the salty, savory meat.
SPAM Poutine: In Québec, it isn’t uncommon to see various proteins added to the classic dish. Dice up some SPAM, fry it until it’s extra crispy, and scatter it over a hot bowl of french fries and fresh cheese curds before smothering the whole thing in warm brown gravy.
The “Canuck” Breakfast Sandwich: Swap out the traditional peameal bacon (or back bacon) for a thick, pan-seared slice of SPAM on an English muffin, topped with a fried egg, cheddar cheese, and a drizzle of maple hot sauce. Or, just go with the sandwich and add mustard!
